What to check in a pair of riding tights

Stretch is useful only when the waistband, seams and fabric remain comfortable in the riding position.

Try more than a standing fit

Riding tights generally use stretchy fabric and often a pull-on waistband, but cuts and support vary widely. Bend at the hip and knee while trying them on. Notice whether the waistband rolls, the seat becomes too tight or excess material gathers behind the knee. The size that looks neat while standing may not be the one that allows comfortable movement.

Check the fabric under ordinary light while it is stretched as it will be in use. Thinness, opacity and seam comfort are separate questions. A soft feel does not tell you how the material behaves when bent, and a heavily compressive pair may feel restrictive to some riders. Compare cuts rather than assuming every pair of tights offers the same amount of stretch.

The lower leg meets the boot

Wear the socks and boots you normally ride in during the final check. A seam or decorative panel can become noticeable when compressed beneath a tall boot or half chap. An excessively long leg may form folds around the ankle. Shortening the trousers by pulling them high at the waist can simply move the discomfort elsewhere.

Grip patterns also vary. Some cover the knee, others much of the seat. Check the maker's description and feel the surface without assuming that a larger grip area is better. If a new pair changes how easily you can move in the saddle, discuss it with the instructor. Clothing should support useful movement rather than hold you in a position you have not chosen.

Pockets and washing deserve a look

A stretch phone pocket should hold its contents securely without placing a hard object where it interferes with the leg or hip. Follow the centre's advice about carrying belongings while riding. Do not use a pocket's advertised size as proof that a particular device is safe or comfortable there during every activity.

Read the care label for both fabric and grip finish. Heat, fabric products or rough washing with exposed hook-and-loop fastenings may be unsuitable for the garment. After washing, check the seams and waistband before wearing it again. If the fabric has become thin, distorted or persistently slips, reconsider the fit and condition rather than relying on an increasingly tight belt or improvised waistband alteration.
