Sort seasonal kit before the weather changes

Sort by the next period of use, checking condition and compatibility before moving equipment into or out of storage.

Bring out one group at a time

Emptying the whole tack room at once often produces a larger mess than the available time can resolve. Start with one group, such as rugs or winter rider clothing, and finish its decisions before opening the next cupboard. Prepare separate places for ready-to-use items, cleaning, assessment and things no longer required. A clear destination is more useful than a vague pile marked later.

Read labels and identify incomplete sets while the items are in front of you. A neck cover separated from its compatible rug or a missing boot from a set should be recorded immediately. Do not assume it will turn up once everything has been packed again. Search or arrange replacement while there is still time before the item is needed.

Check before the weather creates urgency

Inspect fastenings, linings and stored surfaces, following the maker's instructions and seeking advice about doubtful condition. Dry storage is helpful, but it is not proof that an item remains suitable. A horse may have changed shape since a rug was last used, and a rider's clothing or boots may no longer fit as expected. Plan fitting checks rather than discovering these problems on the first cold morning.

Arrange cleaning and repairs early enough to allow for collection or service delays. Keep a record of which items have gone away and the promised work. When they return, check them against that record before storing or using them. A laundry bag with a receipt attached should not be treated as proof that every requested repair was possible or completed.

Store the outgoing season deliberately

Clean and dry items according to their care guidance before packing. Label bags with useful contents and any compatible pieces, and keep the most likely transitional equipment accessible. Weather rarely changes in one tidy step. An arrangement that buries every lighter rug beneath heavy winter equipment may need undoing a few days later.

Use the sort to update what you actually own before shopping. Duplicates are easy to buy when an existing item is hidden in an unlabelled container. Keep a short purchase list with a reason for each addition, and remove unusable equipment from the working collection. The seasonal change should leave fewer uncertainties: what is ready, what needs attention and where the appropriate equipment can be found when conditions change.
